Why Minecraft?

fodina_avatarWelcome, fellow miners! I am Fodina (foe-dee-na, from the Latin for “mine”), or Dina for short, and I’m glad you stopped by.

As I contemplated writing this introductory post, I felt a little like Steve on the beach – Just how did I end up here? Well, I guess it’s really all EQN Landmark’s fault. You see, I signed up for Landmark Alpha, and on their forums, everyone kept making comparisons to Minecraft. I had heard of Minecraft but never played or even seen it played. So off I went to look for more information and see if there was a Minecraft demo to check it out for myself.

Okay, seems simple enough – break blocks, place blocks, and don’t let the monsters get you (especially the creeper). What’s all the fuss? Time to try the demo…

Oh. My. God. Simple, yes, but also FUN – with big capital letters and flashing lights! Within minutes I was having a blast. I’ve been playing video games since the Pong console that you hooked up to the TV, and I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun. And simple, yes, but with the huge (and I mean HUGE) variety of mods available, it can also be as complex as you like. You can play solo, just with friends, or with people from all over the world. You can turn off the mobs and just build, or play “Hardcore” and get just ONE life, or almost anything in between. You can set up different worlds to play one way one day and another way the next. And if you ever find yourself saying, “I wish it had…” chances are someone else did too and there’s a mod out there that adds that feature, or a modder willing to make one.

Thanks for visiting, and I hope you’ll drop by again. As soon as I get my computer set up for video capture, I’ll be doing reviews/spotlights of my favorite mods and possibly some Let’s Play series.

Have a fabulous day! (Ten minutes at a time.)
